Connecting local identity and global communities

Role: Co-Founder, Concept development, Interaction design, User experience design, Prototyping, Usability testing, Software development, Product strategy

Houldu, was my first attempt to entrepreneurship. The venture started when together I connected with the founder, finding the vision and aspiration very exciting. The venture was about connecting people together and allow them to fully immerse and live like locals anywhere.

Creating a digital business that connect locals with the global community

We started to explore, conceptualise and prototype a digital platform focusing on a mobile application first. Together with my cofounder, we worked to define the value proposition and prototype the product vision, testing it with investors and customers.

By conducting customer research with locals in my neighbourhood in New York, I could generate initial insights. Taking into account user and business needs we entered our ideation and prototyping phase. I focused on creating the information architecture and experience flow, while creating and initial UI design direction. Simultaneously I started coding on iOS so that we could quickly create a working prototype to test live with few customers and understand further their needs. I learned Swift, AWS services, database modelling, Authentications, Social Account integration and Location based mapping.

The concept went through various iteration cycles before reaching Beta phase. The prototypes turned from low-mid fidelity to actual code and slowly the vision of the brand was defined. During that period we onboarded a developer to assist with optimising databases and connections with AWS services. I was responsible for coordinating, defining requirements, checking code and implementation quality.

The developed prototypes logged many testing hours with users during the Alpha and Beta phases. The company decided to launch as is and the final product was made available in the App Store in 2018.

Alignment in the founding team is at the core of entrepreneurship

The venture, even though there was a launch at the App store, did fail mainly because misalignment in the founding team, not only on the activities but the approach of building the business. I decide to exit the venture when we were at beta before its launch to the App Store in 2018. It has been fulfilling to create something from scratch and entrepreneurship is a journey that I will keep on taking.
